Birding break in Northern Greece, Nov 14th 2023
Last week we had the chance to escape from our local patches and birding tours, since a very rare visitor arrived in Axios Delta. Lefteris from Greece Bird Tours was there, here's his report from his twitching story!
Snow Buntings (Plectrophenax nivalis) are always a welcome vagrant to Greek birders; their striking white plumage and their calm temper, allowing very close encounters, render this small passerine especially attractive to regular birders and twitchers alike. This year, a single individual was spotted close to Axios Delta, one of its favourite spots as it has been recorded several times in the past in this area. This bird was very tame (as expected), being too busy feeding that it paid absolutely no attention to birdwatchers, the only time it was looking up was when other birds flew overhead.
