Birding break at Schinias National Park, Sept 25th 2022
On September 25th, we guided a group of naturalist from USA at Schinias National Park, organised by renowned biologist Nigella Hillgarth. The weather was ideal for a short walk at Schinias Rowing Centre, and we were lucky to visit the area at a day when the rowing teams were not practicing.
The highlight of course was the Ferruginous Ducks. This world threatened species of waterfowl breeds succesfully in the area. Since there was no distruction from any rowing activity, we counted 85 individuals, an impressive number for this species, for an area so close to Athens center.
Other highlights of the day were flocks of Grey Herons, Little Grebes, brief views of the last Hoopoes of this fall, Black-headed Gulls, Northern Wheater.
