Greater Spotted Eagle at Schinias National Park
The Greater Spotted Eagle is, undoubtedly, the rarest raptor seen at Schinias NP and a very impressive bird, especially when seen in flight. Since 2004 it has been recorded almost every winter, most probably the same bird that started as a juvenile and became a full grown adult. Then, last couple of years was missed but this may have been because of the pandemic restrictions that minimized the visits by birdwatchers.
In any case, the sight of this majestic bird of prey in early February 2022 gave hopes for its future presence as the bird seen was a sub-adult; fingers crossed, it will come back again next December and perhaps continue the legacy of its predecessor.
