The southern tip of Attica is a very popular destination for mainstream tourists because of the beautiful beaches, the numerous taverns and the famous Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio.
It is, however, also a very nice birdwatching destination due to the presence of several Athenian rarities.
The most important is the Bonelli's Eagle; this very rare raptor has a very patchy distribution in mainland Greece and this is the closest to Athens area to look for it. Furthermore, Rock Sparrows are resident breeders, while other interesting species include the Blue Rock Thrush, the Black-eared Wheatear, the Rock Nuthatch and the Cretzschmar's Bunting.
During migration, the area is famous for the Bee-eater, Golden Oriole and Turtle Dove passage, while many more passerines can be found, especially in April. The sea area is also great for the Shag, the Cory's and the Yelkouan Shearwater.
