Winter Harriers in Athens

Every winter, Schinias wetland gets flooded with water and...harriers. Marsh Harriers are by far the most common but there are also quite a few Hen Harriers. All are easily seen while searching for prey in the open areas of the wetland.
Female and immature Marsh Harriers are the most common sights

Male Marsh Harriers are quite rare but regular

Hen Harriers are scarce but widespread

Of course, they're not the only wintering raptors. Large numbers of Buzzards join the breeding birds and Sparrowhawks inhabit every available site, including large city parks. Last, but certainly not least, the Great Spotted Eagle has once again arrived in Schinias, for the 9th consecutive year!
