A small tribute to the hunted....

Perching Turtle Doves are a common sight every summer in Northern Greece, Unfortunately this picture vanishes in late August..On August 20, the hunting season begins in Greece. One of the first species affected is the Turtle Dove. Thousands of birds are killed every year on their journey back to Africa.....as if the many hazards of their trip are not enough (travelling thousands of miles overseas, crossing Sahara Desert, etc). And, many thousands are still shot every spring, even though it is illegal. Ionian Islands are the "champions" of poaching, with Turtle Dove hunting being part of their tradition.....
